Dental Spatula Types: Cement, Mixing and Impression Spatulas Explained
Dental Spatula Types: Cement, Mixing and Impression Spatulas Explained
A dental spatula is a flat-bladed mixing and manipulating instrument used in dental procedures to mix dental cements, amalgam, impression materials, and plaster. Spatulas are essential in restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, and laboratory work. For wholesale dental supply buyers, understanding the different spatula types, blade materials, and clinical applications ensures the correct instruments are included in dental kit configurations.
What Is a Dental Spatula Used For?
Dental spatulas serve several functions: mixing two-component dental materials (cement base and catalyst), folding and loading impression materials into trays, mixing gypsum products (plaster, stone) in the lab, transporting mixed materials to the treatment site, and smoothing and contouring provisional restorations. Different applications require different blade rigidities and shapes.
Types of Dental Spatulas
1. Cement Mixing Spatulas (Stiff Blade)
Cement spatulas have a flat, stiff stainless steel blade used for mixing zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE), glass ionomer cement, resin-reinforced cements, and other two-component dental cements on a glass slab or paper pad. The stiff blade applies firm pressure to thoroughly incorporate the powder and liquid components. The most common designs are the No. 24 and No. 27 cement spatula patterns.
2. Alginate / Impression Material Spatulas (Flexible Blade)
Impression material spatulas have a wider, more flexible blade suitable for folding and mixing alginate, polyvinyl siloxane (PVS), and polyether impression materials. The flexible blade allows thorough mixing without incorporating air bubbles. They are used in conjunction with a rubber mixing bowl.
3. Plaster and Stone Spatulas (Laboratory Spatulas)
Laboratory plaster spatulas are large-bladed instruments used in the dental laboratory for mixing die stone, plaster of Paris, and gypsum materials. They are typically made from stainless steel or plastic and are designed for use with plaster bowls.
4. Wax and Composite Spatulas
Wax spatulas (also called wax knives) are used for carving and adapting wax patterns in crown and bridge laboratory work. Composite spatulas have a non-stick PTFE or titanium-nitride coated blade to prevent composite resin from adhering during placement and contouring.
5. Oral / Tongue Spatulas
Oral spatulas (tongue depressors in stainless steel form) are used during intraoral examination, cheek retraction, and mixing materials directly in the oral cavity. Reusable stainless steel oral spatulas are an alternative to disposable wooden tongue depressors in settings that autoclave all instruments.
Dental Spatula Types: Comparison Table
| Type | Blade Material | Blade Rigidity | Primary Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cement mixing spatula | Stainless steel (AISI 420) | Stiff | Mixing dental cements on slab |
| Impression spatula | Stainless steel | Flexible | Mixing alginate and PVS |
| Laboratory spatula | Stainless steel or plastic | Medium | Plaster and stone mixing |
| Composite spatula | PTFE-coated or titanium-nitride | Flexible | Composite resin placement |
| Oral / tongue spatula | Stainless steel (AISI 304) | Stiff | Examination, cheek retraction |
What Material Should Dental Spatulas Be Made From?
Clinical dental spatulas in contact with dental cements and patient tissues should be made from AISI 420 or AISI 304 stainless steel. AISI 420 provides good corrosion resistance and sufficient hardness for the stiff blade required in cement mixing. AISI 304 (surgical grade) is preferred for oral spatulas that contact mucosa. All spatulas must be autoclave-compatible, rated for a minimum of 134 degrees Celsius sterilization cycles.
